International Languages

The International Language Programs develop students’ knowledge and understanding of different languages and cultures.

There are many benefits to learning an additional international language. Learning additional languages improves memory, cognitive skills, enhances the ability to multi-task, and improves performance in other academic areas. At DSC International School, we provide students a choice of three international languages:

  • Chinese (Putonghua)
  • French
  • Japanese

In Grade 1 to Grade 3, students have a 40-minute International language lesson every day. In Early Years and Grade 4 to Grade 8, there are four 40-minute international language lessons in a week.

In the Secondary Section, French is offered in Grade 9 while both Japanese and Putonghua have three courses each ranging from beginner to advanced. Each credit course is a full semester in length and counts as part of the 30-course graduation requirement. All students must take at least one second language course to fulfil the graduation requirements. Please see the following information below specific to each international language.

Chinese (First and Second Language)

We offer both First Language and Second language Putonghua Programs for our students. Our Putonghua teachers are all native Putonghua speakers and qualified to teach in Hong Kong and China. Please visit our Chinese Program website for more information.

Our French program is a Second Language Program that follows the Ontario French curriculum. All students with or without knowledge of the language can choose to enrol in this program with the exception of Grade 9. Students wanting to select French as their second language credit option in Grade 9 must have previously studied French (a minimum of 600 hours).

We offer a Japanese First Language Program for Grade 1 – 8 that follows the Japanese National Curriculum. This program is only open to students whose first language is Japanese. For Grade 9 – 12, students have the option of choosing Japanese as a Second Language (Level 1, 2, or 3) as a credit course.
