Chinese (Putonghua)

The Chinese program of DSC prepares students to immerse into Chinese-speaking communities and prepare for the external Chinese proficiency exams to enhance their future education and career choices.

DSC offers both First Language and Second Language Chinese programs for our students and uses Putonghua as a medium of instruction. Our Chinese teachers are all native Putonghua speakers and qualified to teach in Hong Kong and China. Apart from the language skills of Chinese, students are also introduced to Chinese culture and traditions with appreciation.

Chinese Programs – Second Language

Chinese Programs – First Language

First Language Level

The First Language Chinese program starts from Grade 1 to Grade 8 for native Chinese-speaking learners. The first language program follows the national curriculum designed by the People’s Education Press in Beijing. The curriculum focuses on four language skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.

For Grades 9 to 12, we offer Chinese (Putonghua) credit courses from Levels 1 to 3. External examinations are also available for students who want to extend their Chinese Studies.

Chinese (High School Programs)

Chinese Literature 1 & 2

This program offers 2 levels and the curriculum is developed based on the National High School Chinese Language curriculum (国家高中语文课程)

In September 2024, we will initially offer Chinese Literature I with Chinese Literature II offered the following year. These courses will be part of our signature program for High school students who have completed LKBDU with 75% or higher. Our Chinese Literature course is a full semester in length, including 110 hours of instruction, and will be offered during a period within our daily timetable. Students in Chinese Literature courses can also choose to participate in external Chinese Proficiency Tests such as HSK Level 5 or above. However, please note that these are non-credit courses that do not count toward the 30 credits required for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).

More specifically, these courses are designed for those students who want to continue to enhance their Chinese literacy level. There are many benefits to completing these courses, including the development of:

  • Advanced writing proficiency and linguistic originality
  • In-depth knowledge of various fields through Chinese language reading
  • A deep understanding of cultural connotations and expressive modes of language that demonstrate language sensitivity and cultural judgment
  • An aesthetic appreciation of language arts and other art forms
  • Active engagement in language communication, enhancing cooperation and interpersonal skills.

Second Language Level

The Second Language Chinese Program is from Early Years to Grade 8.  All students with or without knowledge of the Chinese language can choose to enroll in this program but they are placed into different levels of Chinese classes (Beginner, Intermediate, and Near Native).  Students can move from one level to the next based on their own individual progression.

For Grades 9 to 12, we offer Chinese (Putonghua) credit courses from Levels 1 to 3. External examinations are also available for students who want to extend their Chinese Studies.
